This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Music and STEM go hand in hand. Students are curious how records work.
The library is a great place to explore, create, and design, and make music!
How does a piece of pressed plastic with bumps create music? Students are wondering, which calls for a Makerspace Activity!
Building a record player from simple supplies is a cost-effective way to engage teens in hands-on STEM learning. It encourages problem-solving, creativity, and shows how different STEM disciplines are interconnected. Additionally, it fosters inclusivity by using affordable materials, provides real-world applications of scientific principles, and can inspire further interest in STEM studies and careers.
Three reasons why STEM is important in the library are:
1) Encourages Hands-On Learning:
Constructing a record player from scratch involves hands-on experimentation with various components such as a turntable, stylus, amplifier, and speaker. This practical experience fosters a deeper understanding of the principles of physics and electronics. This can be created with a simple piece of paper, pencil, and needle!
2) Allows for Problem-Solving Skills: Teens encounter various challenges during the construction process, such as designing the mechanics and troubleshooting issues. These challenges encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity.
3) Application of STEM Concepts: Building a record player provides a real-world application for STEM concepts. Teens learn about rotational motion, sound amplification, and more, all while working on a fun project.
This fun STEM makerspace activity will allow students to notice, wonder, and create music using vinyl records.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
