Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The Alum Rock Union School District in San Jose is nestled in the beautiful foothills of the Santa Clara Valley in the San Francisco Bay Area. Alum Rock is a family-oriented community committed to its children and schools. Alum Rock District consists of K-8 schools only.

Joseph George is one of six middle schools in Alum Rock, and the student population is just over 600 students.

Over 85% of the student population is from a low income household. With COVID-19 school closures our district provided laptops and hotspots to accommodate students in need. Despite this assistance, many students were unable to access online work because of internet connectivity issues. This posed significant problems with teaching and learning.

My Project

The digital divide couldn't have been any wider during the nearly three month period of school closures in Santa Clara County. Music educators were then asked to teach ensembles from home, but many inequities occurred. From bandwith connectivity issues to lag time in recordings, it made a significant impact upon those who received quality instruction and those who did not.

Music technology is necessary to effectively teach musical ensembles at a distance.

With this grant, I will become more acquainted digital recording and use of a microphone on virtual platforms. I will explore various online resources in order to properly educate my choir and piano students and prepare for continued distance learning into the coming school year.
