Music Library Beginnings

Help me give my students the groundwork for a music library from which to select repertoire for concerts and performances.

My Project

This year marks the inaugural season for my school's chorus, the population of which is wonderfully unique. A large portion of my students are Hispanic, many of whom are non-native English speakers. The performing arts can make a huge difference in these students’ (and all others, as well) educational experience; it is critical that they are provided a good-quality music education.

Our chorus is in dire need of a music library.

We have very few pieces of music suitable for our group. We need financial assistance to give these students what they need to succeed.

Chorus can be these students’ comfort zone. Making music, enveloping themselves in a song, will bring these students into a safe space that might otherwise feel foreign to them.

The songs in these collections will provide my students with a foundation of repertoire that can be sung in a variety of performance settings. Included are settings of folk songs, a variety of holiday-specific songs, multicultural pieces, and more. These songs will build upon students’ pre-existing experiences as well as introduce them to new ones. The majority of the pieces in these collections are partner songs; these are an accessible challenge that will pave the way for student success while giving them just enough of a push to foster a sense of ambition.

Language barriers create obstacles that music can overcome. Music can give my students an outlet for emotional expression; that which cannot be expressed in words can be conveyed through music. Singing can give my students, who come from a variety of backgrounds and speak different languages, a sense of togetherness.

The performing arts are powerful. My students need to experience the power of music. Please help us give them what they need.
