Music, Lasers, Fog, and... Physics Learning!!

My students need a fog machine, balloons, lasers and embroidery hoops to create their own laser light show. The excitement generated when I've done this demo is amazing!

My Students

Some of my students think Physics is just equations and work. Nothing could be further from the truth! We get to play with the coolest toys in school and we have competitions and Physics Phun all the time!

My students come from very diverse backgrounds, but one thing I try to instill in each of them is the wonder of science.

The magic of Physics comes alive in my room with interactive projects, hands-on labs, and mind blowing demos that reveal deep misconceptions most of us have about how things work. On the first day of school my students work together to try to understand how Lenz' Law works (without ever having been taught the concept). It's amazing to see the ideas that sprout forth on that first day. From then on, they are constantly challenged and must defend their positions with evidence.

My Project

I am envisioning a lab activity that students can create in our lab and have fun with (and use that knowledge at home if they like). We will be building a sound activated laser light show (with fog included). Light from lasers will bounce off mirrors that are attached to the rubber of a balloon that has been stretched over an embroidery hoop. The hoop is placed in front of a speaker and the fog is allowed to fill the space between the hoop and the screen (where the laser patterns are shown). Once the music starts, the speakers drive air that hits the rubber and shakes the mirrors. The screen becomes a laser show of repeating patterns that dance to the music. It's an amazing sight to behold and students' minds are opened up to the ideas of reflection, wavelength, frequency, sound waves and interference. This will tie together many of the topics we will cover in the unit dealing with sound, light and waves.

Your donation will go toward the items that we will use.

I have some rudimentary equipment already and know it works; I just want to fine tune it and let the students experiment a bit. When we get to the sound and light portion of Physics, I will have this awesome project to spark my students' imaginations. Once they see how easy it is to do, they will be able to recreate it cheaply at home. The excitement generated will hopefully carry through to the math we will learn to explain concepts.
