Music Integration in the Classroom

My Students

I teach Special Education in an urban, public neighborhood school in Erie, PA. The children and families in our school community are a diverse cross section of many different cultures, ethnic groups, and languages.

When working with young people, there are times you see results in 10 seconds, and there are times you won't see them for 10 years.

Either way, keep planting those seeds of character; eventually, they bloom!

Our life skills and autistic support students have many challenges facing them, now more than ever. Our district has decided to adopt a hybrid model which includes virtual and in person learning. We will need to keep our social distance during the in-person learning. With this project I’m hoping to expand the virtual learning resources in our classroom.

My Project

This pandemic has been hard for everyone but especially hard for my students. They do not like changes in the routine and not being in person one week and at home the next did not help either. I am hoping with the use of music in the classroom and while learning virtually it will have a positive impact on the sensory needs of my students.

Music can help reduce the feelings of anxiety and stress.

It can also help them regulate their emotions.

The virtual environment created by a tablet is stimulating for students who may feel unmotivated by a traditional classroom setting. The iPods provide a way for their work to be interactive and will increase their focus and motivation by elevating their mood.
