A CD player in our classroom would be awesome! Music is in my student's daily lives; it activates my students mentally, physically, and emotionally. So bringing it into the classroom just seems the best thing to do!
I have 38 - 4th Grade Students for Reading, Writing, and Social Studies.
I have students from the inner city of St. Louis. I am very proud of my students. They walk, ride the school bus, and some ride two city buses to get here. Bringing music into our classroom would enhance the students learning experiences greatly. I would also like to spend time teaching the students about the music of St. Louis during our study of it's history-music and art were important to the city throughout it's history.
My Project
We listen to many forms of music; blues, jazz, rap, international, reggae, and rock. It is all important to my students, it is in their daily lives in the city. I feel that bringing in music, addressing information about it, and listening to it will enhance what my students already know. It would also allow me to bring in other forms of music the students do not know much about. Listening to the music during quiet reading and writing time does create an emotional feeling for students. The use of background music during vocabulary decoding or group readings is a cornerstone of Accelerated Learning techniques which improve memory, reading comprehension, and super intelligence!
When students are learning songs, they learn about many other subjects.
For instance, the history of the world and its people is written in folk music where the everyday experiences of ordinary people are recorded as joys, sorrows, and just plain fun. Songs mention cities and countries throughout the world to teach children about geography and concepts of social studies. Music will make a giant difference to my students.
