This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students need music and movement in the classroom.
I am a special education teacher at a rural, low-economic, community school located in a southern state.
My students range in age from eight years old to thirteen. With ADHD, learning impairments, and behavioral issues each day is a struggle that proposes a new barrier for them to overcome. Therefore, incorporating rhythm and creativity into the curriculum will break the barriers and provide an appropriate outlet for daily frustrations.
My Project
Each day I involve my students in a music/movement activity that promotes attention, social skills, teamwork, and provides a chance to unwind. I would like to expand this activity with the addition of tangible manipulatives. The incorporation of musical instruments into our daily routine will allow my students to better express themselves as well as provide an avenue for appropriate sensory stimulation. This in turn will improve their self-expression, motivation, and overall classroom performance.
With no budget for creative materials, it is difficult for my students to experience the joys of art and music.
With these items and your generosity, they will be able to open a closed door and experience the world of rhythm.
