As a professional musician and music teacher I have had countless adults tell me how they wished they had learned to read music. Often music reading is presented in an abstract or boring manner that students don't connect with.
The public charter school that I teach in services a broad spectrum of students in terms of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and learning ability.
Many students' home cultures are rich with music so they have a deep love and appreciation for it; they haven't, however, had much formal training in music.
My Project
Boomwhackers have been a unanimous hit with my students. I have brought in my private set for use for various activities, including rhythm studies, integrated movement, and imaginative play. If each of my students had a set to use we could expand the learning to note reading, chord studies, ensemble playing... the possibilities are endless. Parents, colleagues, and community members also love the dynamic performances that are possible with Boomwhackers, which can bring in more support for music education.
While music programs are being slashed to make room for standardized test preparation, this is a chance to push back and expand the music education of almost 150 deserving students.
Music education has been shown to positively influence students in many academic arenas and is especially important for students who may struggle with traditional subjects. Help enrich the lives of deserving students who love and thrive with music.
