My students need a variety of musical instruments and accessories to learn about the elements of music.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
It is always a great pleasure for me to see students engaged in lessons that have real meaning for them. Give the gift of music!
I am a first grade teacher in Los Angeles.
Approximately 60 percent of the students at our school are African American, about 30 percent are Latino, and the remaining 10 percent are a mix of Pakistani, Ethiopian, Anglo American and others. I always have many talented children in my classes, and I am always looking to expand the educational program I deliver.
The music program my school district provides is good in many ways but is infrequent and, generally speaking, does not put musical instruments into students' hands.
My Project
One of my duties as a teacher, I feel, is to provide my students with a foundation in music. I teach basic rhythms and students learn songs and sing along with their guitar-playing teacher. Unfortunately, we lack musical instruments. We do have rhythm sticks and of course children can use their hands to tap rhythms, but I would love to provide my students with real instruments, such as drums, mallets, chimes, cymbals, bells, and a Glockenspiel. Students will use their instruments to learn rhythmic patterns and to create music of their own. This year I will also teach basic drum notation.
In my classroom, music is used as an extension of lessons in other areas of the curriculum, such as literacy and mathematics, as well as taught as a curricular area in its own right.
The supplies that you provide will form an important part of the excellent primary curriculum that I strive to deliver. Rest assured: your donation will make a real difference.
