My Project
Recently, my students have been interested in how music and music therapy can be used in the real world, as career options. Anxiety has been a big problem and the numbers seem to be on the rise for high school aged students. We would like to try to combat that problem through creating meditative musical experiences for the entire school population.
One of the best reasons my students are in band is to perform for others, and help them though the healing power of music.
We would like to learn how to create these musical experiences and offer them to the rest of the school as a form of community service after our school day is done to help people relax and get into a less anxious state of mind. This can be done first once a week through music club and then hopefully a little more often as needed, especially around midterms and finals. Band students will stay in school after their day is technically over, to provide these meditative experiences for the other students and faculty. Giving their extra time beyond what is required of them during the day will help them fulfill their community service hours and provide a real feeling of just helping people in general.
The materials requested are part of a sound bath experience, and would pair very nicely with other instruments we already have. Singing bowls are a commonly used instrument in meditation and yoga, and the ocean drum helps to provide another relaxing sound. My band consists of students of all ages 14-18 and we would serve the entire school with our musical experiences.
