Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I would like to get a set of 10 personal CD players to motivate and inspire my students during their independent learning.
I am a first year Special Education teacher for seventh and eighth graders at Mathson Middle School in East San Jose. I run the Resource Specialist Program and service 31 students for their special learning needs.
My students are an exciting challenge to say the least. There is anywhere from 6-15 students at a time in my classroom. They come to me for one hour of math and language arts every day in order to build on basic skills and accommodate work from other classes. This means that my class is centered around each student's personal learning needs.
There are many types and degrees of learning disabilities represented in my room. Research shows that many students with learning disabilities and attention disorders focus better when they can listen to music while they work. It is difficult to apply this class-wide with a stereo because of the vast differences of learning styles in my classroom. Being able to play their own (approved) music during class will help many of my students play on their strengths and will help them with motivation.
The other benefit of having these in the class is that students will be able to listen to books on CD in order to raise reading fluency.
I really believe that offering students a choice of how to learn is an important step in my program. Individual CD players will also offer a chance for my students to learn more about their own learning style.
Thank you for supporting Special Education programs in public schools and the students that receive these services.
