My Project

I started an instrument program at my school, which serves students with special needs. In addition to general music classes, I currently teach 28 students on 5 different instruments, which they get to choose from. These students would normally not have an opportunity to see, touch, or play these instruments. Now they are learning scales and songs with peers from different classes. Music brings everyone together, regardless of age or ability.

My goal for this project is to gather a collection of school instruments so our school funding can transfer from rental fees to other materials needed for a successful music program.

The school currently pays the rental fees for the instruments, so it is free to the families for our students to participate. We are currently renting 17 instruments that students share with supplemental mouthpieces. This project to get flutes, and violins will help establish a strong foundation for our instrument program moving forward and allow more flexible scheduling.

The students involved in instrument class are provided a challenge to help them grow as individuals. There has been much progress and growth evident through the first year of this program and I am excited to see the effect is has on the students for years to come.

Once they have spent more time on the instruments, I plan to expand the experiences for the students. This includes performance opportunities or other community engagements to further their appreciation and understanding of music.
