My Students

As I start a new school year teaching music, I want to make sure my students are provided for in every way possible, and that includes having quality instruments. Due to budget shortfalls especially with the arts, DonorsChoose.org provides an amazing avenue for educators to bring the very best to children in need.

My students don't have a lot and it has been my goal as an educator to fundraise as much as possible to help them get what they need to have exceptional experiences in music.

I've had a lot of success at my other schools through this great organization and will continue to bring high-quality instruments to students in need.

My Project

For 10 years, my ultimate goal as a music teacher has been to start my own African drumming ensemble and, thanks to the help of generous donors and grants, I am almost ready to begin that journey for my students. Now that we have enough drums for a class of 25, we need the leader drum so students or myself can stand in front of the group to lead them in multicultural musical experiences.

The Ngoma drum stands tall, allowing all students of the drumming ensemble to see the leader playing rhythms, beats and music signals for the group.

It's an impressive instrument of African origin but will be used to play music from all over the world, including Latin America and the Caribbean. It's covered in traditional African Kintecloth pattern and has a powerful sound.

My world drumming ensemble will play at as many school and community events as possible with the new drum. Students will start at a young age learning how to play these amazing instruments, and when they reach 4th grade they will be able to join the after school performing ensemble. The drum that is being purchased here will be reserved for the experienced 5th graders who have already put in one year in the ensemble and are able to lead a group without teacher assistance.

The Ngoma is the last piece of the puzzle for our world drumming ensemble to happen, and I hope that we can do it here on Donors Choose!
