The magic that occurs when children begin to play music is amazing! Children learn rhythm, memorization skills, and how to smile enormously! My students love when they have the opportunity to dance and sing. They learn new concepts so much faster when they are introduced through music. I am an Early Childhood Special Education teacher at Irving School on Chicago's west side. There are very few self-contained special education classes that serve preschool and kindergarten-aged children in the Chicago area; therefore, my students are bussed from neighborhoods throughout the city. To qualify for services in my classroom, the students are either significantly developmentally delayed or diagnosed with a specific disability such as autism, cerebral palsy, or a genetic disorder. I currently service 14 children aging chronologically from 3-6 and developmental skills from 12 months through 5 years. Music enriches the lives of all of my students. They are encouraged to become active, independent learners, a trait that will impact the rest of their lives. Young children with special needs learn best through hands-on exploration of the world. They need instruments, songs, and activities that will not only help them to develop a life-long love of music, but that will enrich their brains. Early reading skills are developed through music activities. The children rhyme, predict lyrics, clap to syllables in words, and memorize new information. I am requesting new instrument kits, CDs of early literacy music, Sing-Along books, and rhyming/rhythm activity kits. These materials will create active, musical minds in my classroom!
