Music Centers and Exploration

My students need opportunities to explore sound and play simple rhythm instruments in structured and none structured activities. Using rhythms sticks, egg shakers and music centers students will learn through play.

My Students

I teach K through 5th grade music in a suburban school with over seven hundred students. My students' skill and developmental abilities vary greatly from class to class. I serve three special ed classes with intellectual abilities, six kindergarten classes, six first grade classes, six second grade classes, six third grade classes, five fourth grade classes and five fifth grade classes. A number of my students attend ESOL, Speech, RTI, Resource and PT pull out. Regardless of their skills or developmental level all of the students are able to participate in music since it is something that can be adapted and pursued at any level. My students are eager to sing, dance and play each week when they come to my classroom.

My Project

My students need hands on experiences in order to understand how music works and how it affects the world around them. Play is the most important method of learning for small children. Through play students learn how things work, social skills, cause and affect and so much more. Putting simple musical instruments into their hands and giving them the opportunity to make developmentally appropriate connections will expand on their future knowledge and academic well being.

Students in my special education, Pre K, Kindergarten and First grade classrooms will use these instruments.

The instruments will be used in and out of the music room for enrichment in their classroom, performances and and music lesson centers. This will not only aid the classroom teachers during their class time but also the music room. This will be the basis of building arts integration throughout the building.
