Music Center Mania!

Help me give my students materials for music centers! Cars for notation practice, spoons for note names and staff placement, ping pong balls for rhythm games, playdough for composition, bean bags for musical cornhole, and baskets for storage!

My Students

If you take a stroll by my class you might see us swinging our partners in a folk dance, exploring new rhythms with rhythm sticks, sitting down to listen to a story with puppets, playing Orff instruments, or maybe even playing a CHASE game (shhh, don't tell their teachers). My students love to move, dance, sing, and play, and we get to do all of that in music every single day! YES!

They are huggers: "Ms. Haverly, can I give you three hugs today?!" amazing musicians: "Ms. Haverly, I already figured out how to play this song!" and dreamers: "Ms. Haverly, maybe someday we could go to Austria where Beethoven lived..." and I love making their dreams come to life in music.

My Project

Students of all ages usually do some kind of center in their homeroom class where they are able to explore, create, and discover concepts they are learning. But what about music? Music is BEST learned through discovery and internalization, and what better way to have students learn than to let them experience music in a tactile way!

Students will use cars with various musical notations (p, f, mf, pp) and find their corresponding match on the "musical parking lot" mat, clear and white spoons to find matching notes on the staff (one spoon with the letter name, the other with the note on the staff), playdough to shape their own notes and make rhythmic compositions, etc.

Being able to physically interact with musical concepts is a huge part of learning for many children and I love being able to put the tools into a child's hand and watch as they discover and grow in music. Music centers have never been done at my elementary school and I can't wait to start them!
