Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Music is a vital tool in connecting to our emotions, culture, and each other. Music is known to improve our mood, lighten up a space, and elicit joyful memories. This speaker and mic set will help me bring joy to students on a daily basis as a welcoming practice during morning arrival, a break from their stressors and studies during their nutrition and lunch, and as a way to re-center when they leave for the day. I will also utilize the speaker to play mood-regulating music and sounds in my office where I provide mental health services, yoga/movement, and meditation practices for students.

The goal of the speaker set is to support my efforts to teach students yoga lessons, movement, and meditation.

In addition to my lessons, the speaker set with assist me in providing a positive school climate at Hollywood High School, help my students feel connected and welcomed on a daily basis, and encourage dance, movement, and reprieve during the day.

I work specifically with the Black Student Achievement Plan at Hollywood High School. My services are culturally affirming for all students, who are predominantly Black and Brown, on free and reduced lunch, and commute sometimes 1-2 hours from underserved communities in the heart of Los Angeles, California. In addition to the higher rates of suicidality in America among Black youth, LGBTQ students, and various sub-populations of youth, our students are also now struggling with community violence and targeted community stressors that have increased trauma, anxiety, and depression in their lives.

Please help me create a trauma-informed, welcoming space for students to decompress, feel safe and grounded, and connect to their school community and each other through music.
