Music Books and CDs That Teach Literacy!

My students need 26 student music texts, music CDs, and listening resource materials.

I am a general music teacher at 2 elementary school in urban Illinois. I teach music to over 600 students in grades pre-K to grade 8. My students are enthusiastic musicians, but at one school I lack an up to date music textbook series for students in grades 2-4. In the current books in the classroom, my students do not have access to up to date songs, genres, or examples of electronic instruments and world music. My students are unable to listen to music from countries around the world, learn songs in foreign languages, or perform movement activities because the we do not have the resources. For this project I am requesting a music series that has songs and song styles that appeal to students today while still teaching the fundamentals of music notation, performance, and composition. For this project I am requesting three items, which in entirety will constitute the second and third grade music curriculum. Fourth grade students will use portions of the listening resource kit. The curriculum set requested, “Musicplay” by Denise Gagne, includes the teachers guide with lesson plans and CDs. The proposal also includes 26 student books to accompany the CDs. In the student books, students both read the words to songs and they learn to read standard musical notation. This will provide one more opportunity for my students to practice reading skills. The material supports and enhances science, social studies, and language arts curricula, and is sequenced for use within Kodaly and Orff music programs. I am also requesting a listening resource kit consisting of CDs of music from a variety of genres and styles. Most of my students have not had the opportunity to learn about classical or jazz music, and the listening resource kit would allow students the opportunity to learn about new musical genres.
