Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Kindergarten/First grade teacher in a Spanish Immersion classroom. I teach in an urban school setting with a majority of our students qualifying for free lunch.
Music is important for language acquisition and for developing a strong vocabulary. Our classroom no longer has a working radio with a CD or cassette player. We are currently borrowing a radio that can play MP3's because not all players do. With budget cuts state and city wide, our school cannot fund a new radio.
Unfortunately, we are also being left behind in the new technology age. By providing our students the use of the iPods we will have an array of music at our fingertips. We will also be able to show videos of our different areas of study. Having access to read-alouds is also important, but what will have a more resonating affect will be to see videos of important heroes such as Cesar Chavez and Martin Luther King Jr. The iPod will also serve to let us appreciate performances by important musicians. As a result my students need 2 iPods to store music and video clips and 2 sets of earphones to listen during small center or independent work time. My students need 2 iPod cases to protect the iPods. My students need 1 Boombox to listen to music whole group. My students need 1 Tunetalk stereo to record their voices for reading assessments and for oral reports.
