Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students come from challenging home, and economic situations. They often fall prey to bad choices, such as gangs, drugs, and other inappropriate choices. They have limited access to inspirational activities such as music. Awakening a desire for education is our greatest challenge.
Our students attend a project based charter High School in a low income community in the southern California area.
They travel long distances to attend our small school from many parts of the city. For many this is the school of last opportunity, they are referred to as "at-risk," students, we however consider them to be "at-promise." Nothing is more inspirational them to watch these students change their lives.
My Project
Our students come before school, during breaks, and stay after school to enjoy our musical equipment. Their cooperation and talent is nothing short of amazing. This year we will offer an after school music club, and are trying to recruit a guitar teacher. With the drum set complete they will finally be able to form their own bands, as we have a bass, and electric guitar. With an extra classical guitar more students will be able to learn from me, or more importantly from each other. The other supplies are drumsticks which are obviously necessary, guitar strings to restring a couple guitars, a capo which they use to quickly change tones, and an acoustic guitar pickup which is vital for our live performances.
It may sound cliche, but this opportunity for our students is exactly like casting a stone into the water, the ripples from this donation will be felt farther than any of us can imagine.
The sheer pleasure and excitement that this creative music program has brought to our school is nothing short of awe inspiring.
