This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in a very dense, urban immigrant community, my students are often balancing multiple lives simultaneously—that of school, home, and the neighborhood; that of American life, alongside their family's important cultural ties to their homelands.
The longer that I have had the privilege to work in such a community, the more I see the importance and necessity of providing my students with as many opportunities as I can for hands-on, exploratory opportunities that are hard to come by in such a densely populated neighborhood.
I love being able to take them out into the world, into nature, and to explore the environment that exists beyond the boundaries of our school's surrounding blocks. In the classroom, I try to continue this exploration through providing creative outlets that they usually can't access outside of school.
My Project
Simply put - I believe in music education, and want to give my students more opportunities to have the tools that they need in order to build their skills and confidence in music. Many of my students take music lessons and are showing an early love for this mode of learning. While I am not a music teacher, I have seen that having instruments in the class automatically promotes a love of and eagerness for music, and gives students opportunities to practice, share their skills, and be exposed to music in new and different ways.
Through this project, I hope to fund a classroom keyboard and sheet music to give my students more opportunities for music education.
As a teacher, I know that having the right materials automatically gets students on the right track to engaged learning. With this keyboard, I hope to give students who can already play piano more chances to practice and expand their skills, and to give students who do not yet know the tools they need to start exploring a new instrument. I look forward to integrating these materials into our class!
