My students at Madero Middle School in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago love to see the world. However, as students with moderate-profound disabilities, they have limited access and a worldview of their Hispanic community only. As a speech language pathologist I strive to expand the communication opportunities of my students. This is difficult when experiential learning opportunities are limited. This idea grew from a recent community outing with some of the other students that I service. After this trip all of my students were not only excited but also wanted to tell everyone about it. Students that use communication devices instead of talking initiated interactions with school staff, those that talk spoke with peers about the trip, and my non-verbal students smiled and laughed. The students at Madero are fortunate to have an outstanding arts and sciences department. Teachers in these departments do a fantastic job of exposing the students to a variety of topics. However, my students often need to see items in context to truly understand them. By exposing students to the museums of Chicago they will gain a greater understanding of the arts, culture, and the world. It will also afford them a knowledge base from which to talk about their new experiences. Once students have more experiences they become more confident and thus better communicators. The excitement of this experience will carry over to school as they tell others of their travels. To make this happen all we need is the transportation. A bus will afford us the luxury of traveling on to the Art Institute of Chicago. Please help my students to expand their worlds. It will benefit them for years to come.
