Help me give my students the opportunity to collaborate on a class mural! Put a paint brush in the hands of each student so that they can show what they have learned through a communally planned display.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The majority of the students have arrived in the country within the last year and are learning English as well as getting a high school education. In Ethnic Studies, these students, many of which have severely interrupted education and therefore are developing academic literacy, learn about how to make a change in the world while also learning to read, write and speak in English. Over 90% of these students come from low-income backgrounds and many were not accompanied by parents or guardians to this country.
In our class, there is a thriving community of students from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, China and Brazil.
They bring into class a huge desire to learn, grow, share their language and culture as well as a joy in making friends and being a part of our community.
My Project
Ethnic studies is all about honoring student's knowledge, and looking critically al the world around us. As we dive in to a unit on migration, students will have the chance to share about their own experiences as well as learn about different migrations from all over the world. After students write an essay on the migration that they research, we will come together as a class to display what we know through a mural.
Our migration mural will be a unique way for students to share with each other the connections between different migrations, the patterns they see and the stories they hope to tell.
Our murals (one in each of 2 classes) will explore questions about why people migrate, how migration changes people and who gets to tell the stories of migration. This collaborative process where students have to take leadership roles, work together and share the meaning they have found through art is unlike anything else they do throughout the school day. With your help we can put a paint brush in the hands of each student so that everyone can participate. We can't wait to see our research displayed in visual form for all to see once we're done!
Although our murals will be on paper instead of on a wall, they will be displayed in the school hallways. This is a powerful opportunity for a group of students who often get overlooked in to make the space their own, tell their stories and tell of what they have learned and accomplished. I hope that they will be reminded of the space they deserve, the importance of their stories and the voice they have in our school when they see the mural they designed and painted in the hall.
