My students need a worm compost bin with the goal of increasing parent participation by bringing food scraps from home to put into the worm composter and teaching families how to reduce their carbon footprint.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My Kindergarten students are from the most diverse part of Tampa Bay. Because of this, our population is made up of many English Language Learners. When they come into Kindergarten, for most, it's their first time in school. It is up to us to make sure they get the best quality public education they deserve. My kindergartners are young, ambitious, and curious.
Kindergarten is a time to explore and play, to imagine and create until the end of the day.
Our school is a Title I/Renaissance School. Most of our students are from low-income families which is reflected by our 91% free or reduced lunch status. Although my kids face socioeconomic challenges, they come to school every day willing to learn. I get the most satisfaction as a teacher when I see their faces light up when they finally understand something I'm teaching or when I read a book that they are interested in. For this reason I have decided to start this project for a Vermicomposting kit
My Project
Our school is in a community where many parents work two jobs and are usually not able to be involved in their children’s academic life enough to help make a difference like research has shown it can, time and time again. I have been thinking of a project that will help bring parents in to school by allowing them to participate hands-on in learning alongside their children. Behold – Vermicomposting - The process of using worms and micro-organisms to turn kitchen waste into a black, earthy-smelling, nutrient-rich humus.
Think of all the food made in the world each year… Well, oddly enough, 1/3 of this food ends up in the trash each year - An estimated 1.3 Billion tons of food ends up as waste and worst of all, in America, 165 Billion dollars are spent every year managing food waste.
I want to get parents and students involved in bringing a change to this huge problem. I am requesting a worm compost bin so that we can start making a difference not only by inviting parents to get involved in school by bringing food scraps from home, but by teaching them about how they can lower their carbon footprint and send less waste to landfills. I believe this project will help parents get more involved in school, which will rise parental involvement and student’s grades. I see a future where the worms that are harvested can be sent home so that parents and children can start their own compost bin and slowly but surely, bring about change. And it all starts right here. Please help make this dream a reality and give children a way to care about the world we live in and make it one future generations will be happy to live in. Thank you.
