Multisensory Learning: Let Students with Autism Shine
Help me give my students useful tools (Sensory Doh, Theraputty, stampers, building sets, stepping stones and an iPad) to learn through multisensory ways.
I work with students with special needs. A majority of my students have Autism Spectrum Disorder. Imitating movement is difficult because they don't know their own body parts so well. Being hugged or touched can be a very big deal because they struggle with tactile issues. Holding a pencil in a functional grasp is a big challenge because of their decreased finger/hand flexibility and muscle strength. They might be very dysregulated in the class because they don't have proper control over their own bodies. My students need support with their sensory and motor needs. They dream of learning and they hope to have a decent future like everybody else.
My Project
Autism is a lifelong condition. As a school-based occupational therapist, I support students with their self-regulation, sensory needs, motor development, and daily life skills in their classroom. My students are eager to learn. The Sensory Doh, Theraputty, and building sets will help them with their finger/hand muscle strength as well as their fine motor and visual motor development. Stepping stones will allow me to create so many sensory motor activities to work on their balance and bilateral coordination skills. An iPad provides me the opportunities to download tracing, drawing, handwriting programs and motivate them to learn through visuals and sounds.
By donating to my project, you will not only help them learn through a multisensory approach, you will ultimately help them with their academic achievement.
My students might face challenges throughout their life. My job is to create meaningful activities to build their fundamental skills. I believe these materials will not only increase their focus and attention but also their desire to learn.
