My Students

My students are a smart, talented group who learn best when instruction is multi-sensory. Each of them learn differently due to a range of language based learning disabilities. The majority of these students include current and former English learners and students who are economically disadvantaged. Many have secondary impairments such as ADHD and anxiety.

My students are eager to read on grade level with their peers.

Prior to the COVID-19 virus, they were proud of the progress they were making. Now that they can't learn in our classroom, full of engaging supplies, they are trying to navigate remote learning from home with me on a computer screen instead of sitting next to them, guiding them with visuals and enriching discussion.

My Project

Magnetic letters and a two sided magnetic/dry erase board will equip my students with tools for success! They will be able to show and tell me the words they can build based on the sounds they are learning. Manipulating the letters to form new words will be possible with these supplies. Segmenting and blending sounds with their own letters will provide a familiar experience.

My students will be able to continue learning visually, auditorily and tactilely, continuing their recipe for success!

The dry erase side of the board will give us the ability to complete the dictation portion of our lesson. I ask them to write the letter that makes a specific sound, spell a list of spoken words and write a sentence as they listen me read. When they hold these boards to the camera, I will be able to see their work and give feedback. These tools will boost their confidence and provide multiple ways to continue learning at home during this coronavirus pandemic.
