This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a very energetic bunch of inner-city students in an ESL and Special Education friendly classroom! They are so excited to learn and have really established a culture of family in our classroom. I teach in an inner-city school where over many of the students live below the poverty line. There are 28 students in my classroom, some of whom speak English as their second language. There are other fourth grade students that would also benefit from this project. If you walked into my room, you would see some of the most fun and loving students you have ever encountered. They are a great group of kids, and they make our school proud.
My Project
In fourth grade students begin to do multi-digit multiplication and division. In order to make this a more efficient process, I encourage them to memorize their facts. I do believe that the major focus is on problem solving and understanding the meaning behind the math, however, I also believe there is a place for memorization so that basic facts don't become a barrier to larger problem solving.
Having these bracelets would motivate children to move through their facts.
Once they memorize a family they would earn the bracelet and be able wear it with pride. This would provide an extra sense of confidence for my students that need more support in learning their facts.
