My Students
For the majority of my students, school is their safe zone. More than half of them come from low-income households, thus they do not have the means needed to purchase basic supplies. Additionally, because most of my students' parents must work multiple jobs to make ends meet, they are lacking emotional support. Many of them even get ready for school on their own and come home to an empty home. My classroom is the one place they know they can come to and feel secure and supported. My goal is to mold my classroom into a comfortable space that will allow their inquisitive minds to flourish.
My Project
Third grade is a huge step for my students. They learn a multitude of new skills, and it is the first grade in which they will get state tested for math and reading. The majority of my lessons consist primarily of small group stations. This allows me to work with a smaller group of students to target deficits; however, that means I must leave something meaningful for the rest of my class to do. For this reason, I am requesting a multitude of manipulatives and games.
Power Pens are an awesome self-checking manipulative that will allow my students to work independently while ensuring they are solving problems correctly.
I am requesting these Power Pens in areas of multiplication, division, time, and fractions. When students choose their answers, they touch the pen to their answer and it will alert them if they are correct or not with a sound. I will also use the giant magnetic charts to teach the important skills of addition and subtraction. The students may also use them independently in order build their confidence!
