My Students

Remember the magic of science class when you were growing up? Physics opens up a world of wonder and excitement for young minds. While learning important concepts, we get to have fun with the coolest toys in school.

My students come from very diverse backgrounds and, from the start, I try to instill a sense of wonder and awe in science in every student.

Some of my students arrive from very affluent neighborhoods, while others have just arrived in this country and face many challenges in getting acclimated to school. In my classes I have more than 20% economic needy students. 43% of the students at my high school are on free/reduced lunch.

The magic of Physics comes alive in my room with interactive projects, hands-on labs, and mind-blowing demos that reveal deep misconceptions most of us have about how things work. On the first day of school, my students work together to try to understand how Lenz' Law works (without ever having been taught the concept). It's amazing to see the ideas that sprout forth on that first day. From then on, they are constantly challenged and must defend their positions with evidence.

My Project

As we are ramping up the school year, I found that some of my lab equipment is broken and outdated. I would like to provide them with working multimeters so they can measure voltage drops, current and resistance amounts in circuits. They will also be able to check for continuity within a circuit and, more importantly, understand how to use one of the most versatile pieces of equipment used for diagnosing electrical problems. Another need I have in lab is for accurate electronic balances. A few years ago I got some electronic balances that work very well. I am adding a few (3) to what I have so that I have enough for the future and for all of my lab groups I currently have.

I am requesting some things so that I can give my students more authentic lab experiences in Physics this year.

The big item in this project is a new lab computer that I will be able to set up with PASCO Capstone software to become an instrument of data collection. I have a set of failing laptops that I am slowly replacing one at a time. These lab computers are connected to a PASCO interface that accepts sensors and probeware. In our first labs in Physics we will use motion sensors that can register change in position, velocity and acceleration of an object. We will graduate to photogates and force sensors. On the horizon are mechanical wave machines, sound sensors and temperature probes.
