This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher's hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world." -David Warlick

My students attend an urban public middle school in a low socio-economic area in southern California.

They are a group of bright 7th and 8th graders who derive from hard-working families and who have to balance their rigorous academic work while tackling the challenges of living in a community plagued by the ills of poverty. My students, regardless of the issues they face on a daily basis, have goals, drive, and most importantly they are hungry for knowledge. They possess great aspirations for change in their neighborhood, our country, and the world. They are surrounded by loving adults and a supportive school community that simply does not have the technological advancements needed for them to be ready to face an ever-changing, technology-driven world.

My Project

My students need the most basic technology in the classroom to be able to work in the creation of documentaries, ethnographies, multimedia reports and presentations as well as art projects that involve graphic design. We need a reliable computer that has the ability to support new computerized programs as well as a printer that will allow students to print their essays, reports, and graphics. We currently only have an outdated desktop that does not support many of the programs we need in order to create and edit videos and no printing capability in the classroom.

My students will learn the 21st century technological skills that are required for them to be competitive in our society.

They will learn public speaking skills needed for the presentation of their multimedia projects to the school community that will also prepare them to be successful college students and vibrant members of the working world, one day. Lastly, I hope these projects allow for the closing of the technological divide that my students falling behind in.
