Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine a class of eager students with no materials for learning about the world around them. Their only access to technology is to crowd around the teacher’s computer. My students are excited to learn about geography, cultures, the environment, and the body. Help make our learning more meaningful!
I’m a first year teacher at a Title I school, with 100% of students receiving free breakfast and lunch.
My students come from low income families and the majority is classified as ELL. In recent years the main focus of instruction had been on reading and math with no curriculum or resources for science and social studies. At home continuing their learning is a challenge since many have no access to the Internet, parents aren't often home with them, or they simply don't have any materials to work with. Many of my students don’t even have a book at home. Even with their hardships, they come to school excited and ready to learn. These future doctors, lawyers, librarians, artists, and CEOs deserve the best learning experience possible. Funding is limited to the main curriculum materials. I have requested items in this donation that will enrich their learning by giving them those crucial hands-on learning experiences. Help my students investigate our world by helping fund this project!
My Project
With a projector my students would no longer have to crowd around my computer. We would actually be able to use the interactive CD-ROMs that come with our textbooks. From their desks we could go anywhere in the world. They would be able to watch educational videos and participate in several engaging activities. A class subscription to Scholastic News Magazine would help improve non-fiction text comprehension as well as broaden their knowledge of the world by keeping them informed on current events. The My Body Activity Center would give my students the opportunity to explore the way the body is constructed rather than only reading about on a worksheet. In the spring the students would use to the jiffy pots to grow their own plants and guide their own hands-on investigation of the plant cycle.
I believe in my student’s future.
They are as capable as any student and should be provided with the same educational opportunities and experiences. Multimedia and hands-on learning are crucial elements to ensure my students are given an equal chance in this competitive world. Funding this project will expose my students to 21st century technology and broaden their knowledge. Their lives at home face a constant struggle, to provide them an equal chance in school would mean so much.
