Multilingual Newcomers Need Help Learning Math

Help me give my students the tools they need to master the basic math skills they missed while emigrating to the U.S.

My Project

My school is the most diverse high school north of Boston. We have multilingual students from Somalia, Angola, Burundi, Congo, Djibouti, Sudan, Venezuela, Brazil, Honduras, Guatemala, Iraq and Afghanistan (and more). Although it isn't part of the high school curriculum, I'm teaching Pre-Algebra to all newcomers. These students have many gaps in their learning, due to their journeys to the U.S., and the pandemic.

Most of my students are homeless, due to the housing shortage in our area.

They are living in shelters, hotels, or with foster families. Many lost family members on their way to the U.S. Many don't have WiFi where they live. My students can use the math manipulatives to help them learn. Most have significant learning gaps in areas such as integers, fractions and place value that are difficult to grasp without a physical representation. They could also benefit from a board game that helps them practice multiplication and division. I've been re-drawing number lines on the board every time we need them, so number lines for each student at their desk would be so helpful. These tools will help them to move on to Algebra and succeed in high school.
