My Project
I have researched books that represent my studentʻs unique backgrounds in order to help them build up their identity so they can be confident and grounded. I included art supplies for a social justice printmaking project I have already begun with my ML haumāna. Covid-19 has had a major impact on studentʻs habits and hobbies. With more students connecting to characters and creators in the virtual world, I think itʻs important to connect them back to their cultural roots and history. Iʻve seen how it can be hard for students to find their place in Hawai`i if theyʻre not Hawaiian, or "not Hawaiian enough" at a school campus split by being both a Hawaiian Immersion and English school. I see how the Kaiapuni education is rooted in Hawaiian language and culture and how it can build confidence in keiki. Iʻd like for all of our students to feel proud and connected to their multicultural roots, including Hawaiian students on the English side of our campus. Itʻs important that all students be connected to Hawai`i as well as any other cultural or ethnic identities that make up who they are.
