Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am currently teaching a fourth-grade class of English-language learners. The small collection of multilingual books were such a huge hit with both parents and students alike last year, I am very excited to expand this library. The parents actually stopped me as they picked up their children to thank me for introducing books in their languages that they could read with their children. I have seen the interest and parent participation that books such as these have sparked with my class last year. These books were taken home, shared with my students' families, and then returned, to be shared by other students. Strengthening native language literacy has been shown over and over again to make a huge difference in children's literacy in English. Therefore I would like to build my library with books discussing life in other countries and experiences of children who have immigrated to America, just as my children have, as well as books which reflect the languages spoken by my students. These include, but are not limited to, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Spanish, French, Albanian, Punjabi, Arabic and Urdu. You cannot imagine what a difference it makes to these children to see a book featuring something they recognize. Either a picture of their country, a mention of food eaten there, or a holiday celebration--or most exciting of all, a book actually printed in their language, which their parents can share with them.
