This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am an English as a new language teacher in a K-5 elementary school. I am new to the school and the students but I can already see the potential in their growth!
These little scholars have moved from different countries, lived through a pandemic, transitioned from in person instruction, remote learning back to school and have had less complaints than the adults doing the same.
It's been a challenging time for all of us, but the kids are happy to be back and eager to learn.
They come to school with giggles and tears, speaking to me in a mix of English and Spanish or Arabic telling me whatever is on their mind at the moment. "I'm here to study" the newcomers tell me. Their parents informed them they are going to America to learn and that is what they're prepared to do. I want to be prepared to give them every resource and opportunity available.
My Project
We have seen throughout this pandemic how reliant we have all become with technology, as well as frustrated with little children using them for extended periods of time. I want to give my students the gift of holding a book.
It means everything to me to be able to create an inclusive environment for my students and that begins with recognizing their identities, including language and culture.
It is so important that kids can see themselves represented in their world and encouraged. There is no easy accessible library for kids who speak languages other than English and we know how important home literacy is. A multilingual library is a great resource for kids but an even more integral part of building a home and school connection to support students and families. A school and classroom is a child's first line of support. I want to be that support for my students and for teachers in my school who also lack resources, but, want to provide support. When we support home languages, student's home life and school connection, we build a community that grows and learns together.
A small gesture of sharing a book develops into greater successes in life. This is my first DonorsChoose project and I can't think of anything more important or pressing than this. The best part is all students can enjoy them as they are in English as well!
