Multilingual Learning: Using Tech to Empower All

My Project

Spanish. French. Haitian Creole. Fon. Portuguese. Brazilian Crioulo. Arabic. Yoruba. Swahili. Kinyarwanda. What do all of these languages have in common? They are just a sampling of the native languages spoken by my amazing science students. 100% of my biology and chemistry students are English language learners. This means that my students are acquiring a second (or third or fourth!) language while simultaneously learning the language of science. Our district is lucky enough to be 1-to-1 with Chromebooks issued to each students. My hope with this grant is to provide the auxiliary supplies needed to support students' use of technology in the classroom.

With these resources, all of my language learners will be able to engage with interactive science media.

Students can listen to digital materials at the speed and in the language of their choosing. These headphones will prevent the classroom from becoming a cacophony of competing languages. They are an easy-to-clean option for all students, many of whom do not have their own headphones to use. Uncharged, or undercharged, Chromebooks are an eternal issue for my students. These additional Chromebook chargers will ensure students are prepared for class throughout the day.
