This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My high school aged students are children from different parts of Central & South America. A few are from other parts of the world. Many have valiantly traveled crossing the border to the "land of opportunity" in unconventional ways. They are eager to learn about baseball, eat apple pie and speak English. They are intrigued and fascinated by the American culture.
This year I have many students who have experienced interrupted learning for several years.
Others come from countries where compulsory learning is only to the sixth grade. Sadly, others are illiterate. A commonality amounts these students is that they value the importance of education.
One hundred percent of our inner city students receive free breakfast and lunch. It is a relief for many that they are assured these meals daily.
My Project
These materials will be used in my classroom to create a comfortable and welcoming environment for them to expand their linguistic abilities. Many students immigrated to the USA only with the clothes they were wearing. They do not even have the basics of home living. Some parents work 6-7 days a week and others have 2 jobs. Students often are alone at home with little to do. Providing them with their own "Corner" where they can interact with other students who are in the same boat will make it more inviting. A space where they can relax, listen to music, do homework, receive tutoring. A place where they feel "they belong". A place where they can express themselves in their native language or sprouting broken English but, feel heard, understood and loved.
