Multilingual Books to Celebrate Diversity and Equality
Help me give my students that have limited english language the opportunity to read books in their native language. Help me create an environment where they feel a sense of belonging and inclusivity.
Imagine the teacher says "Class it is independent reading time. Grab a book and read for 20 minutes." Everyone knows what to do, has a book that is at their level. Well, Almost everyone. There are 3 students that are newcomers and do not speak English. Usually the teacher will put them on the computer to play games or on an app for learning English. Sometimes you will see them grab a popular book and pretend they are reading. Books should be available for all students that represent where they are from as well as their culture.
Our classrooms and schools are changing and are more multicultural than ever.
I am a new EL teacher in the Amesbury School district that is seeing an influx of non english students. What I love about teaching English Language Learners is their passion to learn english. They are so inquisitive and motivated to learn.
When I first started here I was shocked to see the lack of bilingual books in both the school library as well as in the classrooms. My project is to get bilingual books into our school and have our libraries and classrooms represent the diversity of students.
I plan on using these books to add in every classroom and the school library. Exposing non english students to books in both their native language and English helps build their vocabulary and emphasize to them how important it is to keep reading, speaking, and writing in their native language as well.
By providing non english speaking students with books in their native language, it will build confidence in our newcomers and create an environment where they feel welcomed. I hope that you will see the importance of my project and help fund it.
