My Students
Could you imagine moving to a new country as a 6th, 7th or 8th grader who doesn't speak English? These are my students, beginner and intermediate ESL students who are faced with the challenge of learning English so that they can succeed in middle school.
My students attend a public Junior High School in Flushing, NY.
They come from diverse backgrounds and countries. Throughout the year I receive new admits who arrived from another country only days before. In my 7th grade class, for example, there are 33 students who speak seven different languages. The students get so excited and feel so validated when they see books in their native languages. It helps them realize that they don't need to abandon their native language and culture, but that they can join what they already know to what they're learning about America and the English language. Native language books are great for beginner ESL students because, after all, it's important to continue working on their reading comprehension skills in their language as they begin to work on English. Bilingual books are a great tool for beginner and intermediate ESL students so they can see their language alongside English words. Thank you for helping my hardworking ESL students!
My Project
We are respectfully hoping for books in Chinese, Korean, Arabic, and Spanish. Chinese and Korean folktales take a peek into the beautiful literature and rich folklore from Asia. Bilingual stories help ESL students by showing them their native language alongside the English version so they can work on vocabulary and English sentence structure. Spanish and Arabic bilingual poetry books will show the students beautiful literature from their own cultural traditions. ESL teaching resource books will open the class up to new activities geared towards the specific needs of an ESL student.
My ESL students are so enthusiastic and eager to learn.
My favorite occurrence is when a beginner ESL student raises his or her hand to participate in English for the first time. For example, Laura arrived from Mexico only a month ago, and she couldn't speak a word of English. She asked me "may I go to the bathroom" in Spanish for a month. Today she timidly raised her hand and answered a question in English for the first time. These wonderful kids really deserve these materials.
