Help me give my students manipulatives across all subjects, like a Yacker Tracker for experimenting with the sense of hearing, a teepee for Native American role playing, and various science and math objects to help them understand concepts.
My students are so excited to be able to learn in-person this year. For many of them, this is their first exposure to school and didn't come with the pre-K skills they usually do. They've had to work extra hard to catch up with previous years' cohorts, but they've done a fantastic job. They love being able to make friends and learn in-person despite all the challenges COVID presents, such as wearing masks, taking the time for extra cleanliness, and learning etiquette for school and social settings.
My Project
I am so excited for the addition of these manipulatives to my classroom. I chose materials to span the number of students and the breadth of the subjects I teach in my AM/PM kindergarten classes. I believe that hands-on materials make all learning more memorable, which is why I've selected items to use for many science and math units, along with a few items for reading, writing, and history. Due to COVID-19, this is the first year many of my kindergarteners have been exposed to school, and there is a huge learning deficit I'm trying to make up. If my students have access to manipulatives that make learning fun, the gap from where they are to where they should be will close so much faster.
Since the pandemic, I have strived to gather enough sets of hands-on projects that my students don't have to share and cross-contaminate, along with other tools to keep them healthy.
I want to keep my students as safe as possible while COVID-19 continues to rage, so I've selected entire classroom sets of things like magnet wands and counting chips, magnetic letters, pattern blocks, counting bears, write-and-wipe sleeves, and dry-erase erasers to reduce the cross-contamination that occurs with sharing. I love using Glo Germ gel with a black light to demonstrate the importance of washing our hands well for our "Keeping Our Bodies Healthy" science unit, especially the last couple of years. Velcro floor spots are a fantastic way to help students social distance themselves in line.
Other items, such as magnetic pattern blocks, math trays, a Yacker Tracker, magnetic base 10 blocks, a magnetic writing page, and a demonstrative magnet set are for teacher presentation, usually to be followed by students experimenting with similar manipulatives at their desks.
