My Students

I currently teach 6th grade ELA at a blue ribbon school in Philadelphia. My students are hardworking, kind, and driven to reach their full potential each academic year, even with the challenges they have faced due to COVID-19. Additionally, my students love to use technology in the classroom and enjoy sites like Kahoot, quizzes and bamboozle.

My Project

As an urban school in Philadelphia, diversity in literature is vital in our curriculum. However, during independent reading time, students do not have access to many books that represent their backgrounds and cultures. Sustained Silent Reading is a routine practice in my class to build reading stamina in ELA. To prepare for this activity, students visit the book nook to select a book to read for 10-15 minutes. These books have been given to us by the school, and though they are classic novels, they are lack minority characters. Therefore, supporting this project will allow students to have the means to read novels that may impact them the most.
