Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students are really funny sometimes...My students ask me about every 8 weeks, "Did you paint your hair? Am I yellow or brown? Are my eyes, brown or black?" These are common conversations my students have with me regarding skin tone, hair, and eye color. My students are limited in their color choices for their art with the traditional 8 or 16 boxes of crayons. They can't draw or color a true picture of what is in their imagination. With this project, my students will no longer be limited to the traditional 8 or 16 colors in the traditional boxes. Their imagination can be expanded further beyond the traditional rainbow with the big box of 64 crayons. In these boxes, there are crayon colors my students have never heard of. Many different shades of yellow or brown, and more options for coloring their skin tone, hair color, and eye color.

Multicultural skin tone colors will help all students feel represented in their artwork-not just the regular brown and black colors that come in a standard box of crayons.

My students live in a poverty-stricken, urban neighborhood. Many come from broken and unstable homes. They attend a Title I school and are eligible for free lunch. They can't afford to buy their own art supplies. Help me give my students realistic choices and an assortment of skin hues to use in the classroom and at home. Over the last year and a half, students have been responding mostly through devices. Let's work together to provide each of them with a more balanced approach and more options than the traditional 8 or 16 color box of crayons.

These crayons can add art and bring to life their journal writing, feelings, and directed art lessons as well as daily assessments.
