Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students in my classroom are energetic and crave a nurturing, educational environment. Many students come from homes that can't provide a fully supportive educational environment due to financial instability.

My students love coming to school and want to make the best of their learning.

They have a natural love for reading that encourages them to read a variety of texts and push themselves when reading challenging texts. Students in 3rd grade love autobiographical books about kids their age in which they are able to learn more about other cultures. They also love reading texts that make them think deeply about our world.

Currently, students have access to a wealth of electronic books about these topics but would love more hard copies to continue their learning.

My Project

This project will help our 3rd grade students better understand the central message (guiding questions) for each module of our language arts curriculum- EL Education. EL Education curriculum provides guiding questions that help students become ethical, responsible people, and better understand the world around them. Students question such topics as, "How do we overcome learning challenges?" in order to both understand cultures around the world and deepen their learning abilities.

Access to multicultural research texts will allow students to become investigators and take a sense of ownership in their learning.

These recommended texts will be displayed as options of which students can use to investigate the guiding question for each unit. With these texts, students will have access to hard copies, instead of just electronic copies. They will be able to browse books that peek their interest and get them excited about learning.

Throughout each EL Education Module students will investigate the guiding question (e.g. "How do we overcome learning challenges?") while practicing critical close reading skills. These texts will be used across three 3rd grade classrooms throughout the year. Teachers will provide access to these texts and students will use research and reading skills to investigate the guiding question(s) throughout each module.
