Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This is my sixth year at a Title I school located in east Portland, Oregon. Most years I have had 4-7 different first languages spoken in my classroom. Students come from diverse and rich cultural backgrounds, and I become a learner along with them each year. They are eager and hopeful, and they gain so much when we have the tools and resources to support their learning and growth. Students in my class are excited for second grade and appreciate the support!
My Project
All students should be able to pick up a crayon, marker or paint color that accurately represents their own skin tone and identity. Markers and crayons are something I buy for my students, and it’s really something all schools should be supplied with. But they aren’t, and I’m not going to let that stop me from making it happen. Help me support and affirm my students, so they can simply accurately represent themselves in their artistic expressions. When students see representation of their diverse identities in all areas and materials in the classroom, they can begin to feel affirmed and seen. This is the most important thing that happens in the classroom.
