Help me give my students multicultural puppets and multicultural books to develop their sense of identity and belonging, as well as give them the chance to explore different cultures from around the world.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Welcome! Universal Transitional Kindergarten (UTK) is such a special place to be! I am so lucky I get to spend my days watching these young ones discover and learn. My students need multicultural materials such as these puppets and books. Representation in classroom materials is vital to teaching diversity and inclusion. UTK is all about hands-on learning, and play is an important part of that. Play in a group setting strengthens social-emotional skills, as children have the opportunity to collaborate with their peers, learn about different cultures, experience a variety of perspectives, and think about the experiences of others.
Many new immigrants find their first home on American soil here in our neighborhood.
Our school is located in City Heights, above the hustle and bustle of the geographic center of San Diego. Eighty-five percent of students are English learners with non-English speakers in the home. Education and equity are very important to our thriving, multicultural school.
