This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a public charter school in inner-city Houston, Texas that prepares them for a university or college after graduation.

It is difficult to maintain the hope, grit, tenacity, and fortitude to realize your dreams and be a positive change for our world, yet these band students defy the odds to become more than expected.

Our Band Program is building from the ground up, mostly teaching high school students as beginners. My students do not let conventional norms stand in their way, they realize their goals more deeply, and they create their own opportunities in order to find success.

My Project

We have few instruments that reflect multicultural music from around the world. We would like to incorporate a more diverse song list to both learn and perform, but we are currently limited by our sparse diversity of instruments.

These Congas and Timbales would allow every performing ensemble at our school to explore more diverse music, and in doing so, elevate our awareness and sensitivity to the many facets of music in diverse cultures.

We already have some arrangements of music that require these instruments to accurately perform the music in its original intent. Our goal would also be to apply different styles of beats and percussion to other songs with these same instruments to cross over genre and cultural boundaries.

In our Drum Line performances and contests, we could use these Latin instruments to spice up our drum features and bring out that Latin vibe in the students.

Indirectly, these instruments will also affect our school dance students. The marching band plays music for their dances during the school year, and the type of music would be expanded for their own shows as well.
