Multicultural Media: I See ME in My Classroom Library!
My students need a classroom library reflective of our ELL (English Language Learner) families.

My Students
Twenty-four eager learners walk through the classroom door each day. They come from different homes and different families, with their own unique stories to tell.
Our school community continues to grow its diverse population.
My classroom is one of the ELL (English Language Learner) cluster classrooms. Our school is home to Hmong, Vietnamese, African, Mexican and other families. These families are the minority in our school. Their young children should not feel like a minority in the classroom. The spirit of the five- and six-year-olds in my classroom is apparent, as shown through their love and joy for one another.
My Project
I strive to create a nurturing and challenging environment for learning. My teaching is most effective when factors such as prior experiences, community settings, cultural backgrounds and ethnic identities are considered in my lesson planning and implementation.
Children's books invite children to use their imaginations, expand their vocabularies and gain a better understanding of themselves and others.
It is imperative that my students have a classroom library reflective of our diverse families. Whether it is a read-aloud for the whole class or a self-selected book for read-to-self, every child should see themselves as they turn pages in storybooks and see a window to the world around them by showing people from diverse groups playing, working, solving problems and overcoming obstacles.
