Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are fun-loving, smart and hardworking! Our students come from all across the city to participate in the unique, ELL (English Language Learner) and ASD program specific for grades 6-8.

My students come from all different backgrounds to create a positive learning environment, where they will be encouraged to brainstorm, collaborate, and create works of art.

It is truly a unique urban setting.

Students at our middle school take an art class for an entire school year as a required elective/specials class and range in different skill levels and abilities.

My Project

This fall, students in 6th grade will be learning about the Day of the Dead and will create papier-mache sugar skull masks. In the past, this unit has been a favorite for 6th-grade students and is a project that they remember fondly. The students will use plastic molds to create the form of their masks and once they dry, they will use the acrylic paints, markers, and glitter glue (along with supplies from our classroom) to decorate the sugar skull masks inspired by the works we learn about in class.

Currently, our student enrollment is larger than our expected budget for the 2019-2020 school year and we will need a lot more materials than we can afford to order.

It is important for students to build and create three-dimensional artwork while in middle school. Not only is it part of our curriculum, but essential to the growth of a young artist's mind. It is also beneficial for students to learn about other cultures, customs, and the type of artwork associated with these cultures.
