Multicultural Literature to Teach Equity to South LA Students

Help me give my students multicultural resources to teach about equality and equity. In an unjust society that many times do not tell the full story, I believe students show be given books that tell their stories!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are creative, inquisitive, and always ready to be hands-on. My scholars are college-bound and ready to beat all odds. My students are special because they are defeating the stereotypes that follow them around because of where they are from. My students are Black and Latino, come from a low-income community, and most have witnessed violence in some way. Society may see my Black and Latino students as destined to fail in the education system, but at our school, we see each student's potential and give them the education they deserve regardless of the zip code that they reside in. Where others see stereotypes, I see my students as future leaders such as future Presidents, Lawyers, Educators, Community Activists, Educators, & Doctors.

My scholars enjoy reading and love getting lost in books, however, at this time we do not have a library with inclusive literature to support our love of reading, especially in non-fiction books.

To allow us to explore the world outside of our classroom and beyond the limits of South LA, we are requesting library donations of books and storage.

My Project

The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students are to push our thinking in literacy, from Black and Brown authors. In other words, I want students to learn from authors that they can relate to. We just need your help in gathering the supplies to have in-depth conversations about injustices we notice in the words as well as literature.

Teaching equity should include authors that match the readers, how can we have equity in literacy if we do not have books from various Black and Brown authors.

For example, by having books written by the late great Rep. John Lewis, students can learn the history of the Civil Rights movement that is the true autobiography of what happened rather than speaking from a limited historical perspective. Also, having students read about various Latinx leaders that have not only impacted their community but also U.S. history. And also using the literature to teach students about government to push for critical thinking scholars to know the impact of their voice when it comes to voting. These books will build a multicultural library, open students to push for an open mindset to see themselves in literature, and opening a new field of interest as authors to Black and Brown students.

These books will enhance students' background knowledge on history (within the U.S. as well as beyond), improve students' vocabulary, and provide more information about government as well as literacy. As a teacher, I have done the research and seen that students have been given limited literature from authors that look like them. Being taught from a Eurocentric POV gives a biased view of history, & now's the time to read their ancestors' stories as well as voice their stories! Thank you in advance!
