Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine going to the library and not seeing any characters in books that look or sound like you? Unfortunately, that's how it is for minority students all over our country. There are so few representations of my students in the media, and I want them to know their lives are valuable!

My students are amazing!

They are African American and Latino kids who are growing up in a high-risk community. Many of their parents are single parents doing the best they can to raise their children. About half of the community is Latino, and does not speak or read English fluently, if at all. I work at an urban public community school in Illinois where we are working hard to ensure academic success to our students!

My Project

I am currently taking a multicultural literature class in my graduate school coursework. I am reading a lot of research that shows students learn better when they can relate to what they are reading. Furthermore, teaching students how to read, think critically about stories, and determine literary elements is much more effective if the students don't have to learn the cultural implications of a story first. Unfortunately, books are expensive and budget cuts are at an all-time high. I need help expanding my classroom library to include books that represent my students. I want both informational books and fictional books to give my students a well-rounded view of literature.

It is so important children grow up with a sense of self-worth and self-confidence.

I want to give my students every opportunity to succeed, and I genuinely feel that surrounding them with books that reflect their culture is essential. Please help me inspire all of my future students to love reading and learning!
